Today Tesla is more than just an automaker. Its ambition is to bring artificial intelligence into the physical world.
Tesla began as a startup dismissed by everyone. It survived the brink of bankruptcy, rose to become the world’s most valuable car manufacturer, and is now assembling a legion of robots. In Musk’s own words:
“Tesla is the most undervalued AI company in the world.”
2003ย โ Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning found Tesla, naming the company after electrical engineering genius Nikola Tesla.
2004ย โ Elon Musk invests $6.5 million in the company and becomes Chairman of the Board. Later, he would become the face of Tesla.
2008 โ The first Tesla electric car,ย Roadster ๐ย is released. It is the first production car to use lithium-ion batteries, with a range of over 320 km (200 miles). It shattered the myth that “electric cars are slow and weak.”
But in that same year of 2008, Tesla nearly went bankrupt โ due to the financial crisis and budget overruns on the Roadster. Musk later admitted that he “woke up screaming.”
The Roadster proved an electric car could be built. The Model S proved it could be profitable โ and better than gasoline cars.
2012ย โ Model S named “safest car ever” by the NHTSA.
2015ย โ Model X with iconic falcon-wing doors. Autopilot launches โ Tesla’s first major step into AI.
2016ย โ Master Plan Part 2 unveiled: solar roofs, energy storage, autonomy, and robotaxis. Model 3 announced โ Tesla’s first mass-market EV. 325,000 pre-orders in the first week.
2017ย โ Model 3 deliveries begin. EVs are no longer a niche product.
2023ย โ Model Y becomes the world’s best-selling car, outselling any gasoline model. A historic moment: an EV tops the global market for the first time.
Meanwhile, Tesla builds gigafactories in Shanghai, Berlin, and Texas. Annual capacity approaches 2 million vehicles.
Energy business grows: Megapack (grid-scale batteries) and Powerwall (home storage). Tesla is no longer just an automaker โ it’s an energy corporation.
This is Tesla’s biggest strategic pivot. The company states clearly: the future belongs to artificial intelligence and physical robots.
Key Events:
Tesla’s three main directions today:
| Direction | Status |
|---|---|
| Electric vehicles (S, 3, X, Y, Cybertruck, Semi) | Mass production |
| Autonomous driving (FSD โ Full Self-Driving) | Beta testing, approaching Level 4โ5 |
| Optimus robot + AI | Pilot production, 1,000+ units in operation |
From the Roadster to Optimus, Tesla has never stood still. And each new advance in AI and robotics tends to send its stock price higher. Tesla’s stocks have strong potential โ it’s AI-powered breakthroughs that will fuel their growth in the years ahead.
